A Review of Some Natural Deodorants

A Review of Some Natural Deodorants

Many years ago, I began hearing about how aluminum in deodorants is associated with breast cancer. Articles cautioning women about this issue began popping up in magazines like SELF and Cosmo, and I felt a twinge of worry every morning when I’d apply my deodorant (even though studies haven’t proven that aluminum is associated with cancer…). I vaguely remember purchasing an ‘all-natural’ deodorant from Whole Foods, but it didn’t do as good of a job as the Secret deodorant I was used to, so I promptly forgot about it.

About a year ago, I began looking for ‘natural’ deodorants again, and now, nine years later, there are so many products on the market. I’m going to talk about four of the ‘natural’ deodorants I’ve enjoyed in order from most to least favorite. All of them are aluminum free. For every single one of these, though, you can’t expect them to last more than one day. Obviously we should all be showering every day, but if for some reason you can’t shower for, say, 36 hours instead of 24 hours, expect that you will need to reapply any one of these. I feel like my usual Secret or Dove deodorants that I wore before trying out these new products lasted 36 hours if I needed it to.

Tom’s of Maine- Lavender

The gel texture on this is great, and the scent is nice too. At first, the lavender scent seemed a little strong, but with an all natural product, the fragrance has to be a little stronger in order to keep sweat scents at bay. The product lasts almost all day, and doesn’t feel much different than a traditional deodorant. It’s also very affordable for an ‘all natural’ deodorant, which is great for my #studentbudget. This one is what I will be using going forward! I’m really happy with it.

Underarmed- Lavender

This deodorant was pretty good, but at $15 a bar, it’s way too expensive, and not worth it in my opinion. The scent and texture were good, but it’s significantly better the Tom’s of Maine, so I’m not sure why anyone would go for this over that one. The scent is basically the same, and they are comparable in terms of natural ingredients. Same issue with the scent being slightly stronger than I’m used to, but again, it’s inevitable with a natural product.

Schmidt’s Naturals- Lavender

I didn’t love this deodorant, partly because of the scent and partly because of the texture. The lavender scent is a little overwhelming (although it’s not THAT much stronger than the Underarmed and Tom’s of Maine deodorants). The texture is also a little crumbly and thick for my taste. At first when I started using it, I felt like it was a rock and that I wasn’t really getting anything on my underarms, but I realized that it melts a little from your body heat, so you may have to rub it on for 10 seconds to really get any product on your skin. That’s fine and all, but I feel like once it melts off, it’s a little too thick. I like other Schmidt’s Naturals products, so I’m disappointed I didn’t like this more. They also have a rose scented deodorant that had the same issues of overwhelming scent and thick texture.

Ohii- Charcoal Rose

The scent on this is AMAZING and I honestly wish they’d make a perfume of it. It is a light rose scent, and I am obsessed. I wanted to love this product, but unfortunately, it just doesn’t do the job for me. It smells nice in the beginning, but I feel like it just doesn’t de-odorize you once you actually start to sweat. I tried to love this product because rose is my favorite scent in the world, but alas. Also, at $12 a tube, it’s not exactly cheap either.

So there you have it. Hope you guys enjoyed this post, and if you have any suggestions for me, please let me know!
